Hoorah, I have a solution,

First, and vitally important, uninstall MyODBC version whatever (I assume 3.5.10) then install the latest (3.5.11) and it's fixed. OK it's not MY solution but it works.

The problem was that the timestamp fields were being recognised on linking as text fields but now they are once more correctly identified.

Note:
If you don't uninstall MyODBC first this behavour isn't corrected.
