hi, and thanks for the help.
i never did get to the bottom of this but when i ran the same merge on a different hosting (my test one) that i originally built the forum on it ran first go without any hitch so i dont know if there was some glitch in the merge software upload or the forum software.

thanks for all of your help and i am now going to learn more about this so in future i will have a better understanding
