You probably cannot win. The issue is a "collation" issue, and that varies with language. You are looking for a German word, but using Swedish collation?
SHOW CREATE TABLE bands
You might get a little closer with CHARSET=utf8 and COLLATION=utf8_unicode_ci. This would also let you get beyond Western Europe.
