I used putty to access the remote server. From the command line, I ran mysql and was able to access the database. Following the instructions here https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/9330/2180/how-to-connect-to-a-database-using-the-workbench-mysql-client/, I tried again from WorkBench. First, using the instructions here https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/1249/2180/how-to-remotely-connect-to-a-mysql-database-located-on-our-shared-server/, I tried port 5522 in the 'MySQL server port' window, but that failed with an error message that it couldn't connect to the server. Then when I tried with port 3306, Workbench crashed again and I know that I am using the correct username and password.
