set date format for column

I am upping the database from excel. No matter how I format the date column in excel it reformats the date to 1/1/2001. I need the date in the 01/01/2001 (as in mm/dd/yyyy) and I can't figure out how to do it. I always seem to end up with 00/00/0000 or blank or just wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Suz
