Heikki,
I tested setting the total innodb_logs to a size greater than 4GB using 4.0.23 on an Opteron box and got an error message indicating that the sum total of innodb_logs could not exceed 4GB. So I had to re-cofig from 16GB to a total of < 4GB.
So I am assuming that sometime in the future Innodb will fix this. The recovery time is not an impossible problem with fast IOs, large RAM and fast CPUs....at least it can be controlled and you can let the user use larger files with the appropriate caveats.
