I would like to strongly second the request for a more detailed explanation of the merging/purging functions and how they relate to innodb log size and buffer pool size.

Our current major db server shows that innodb primary thread is constantly 'purging' and it seems to be going on for weeks with no end in sight, doing reads at 5MB/s and occasionally writing at 500KB/s. (The IO system can do much better than that) Is there a plan to have multiple thread merge/purge so it can go faster?
