I've got same problem on mandrake - I know that you read those thread, but anyway - I suppose that on mac there should be similar configuration file. On win there is for instance the my.ini configuration file - so propably the name of the file depend on the system. the stack trace really seem to be related with same problem.
So do not give up - you should find out similar configuration file on mac as well.
BTW - you said that you connect via telnet - but did you try to connect on port 3306 (default tcp/ip mysql port)? If there is nothink listennig on that port - then the goal is to find out somethink like: skeep network in the mysql configuration.
