Hi Brian,
this is now more clear - if telenet response then it is different problem, because mine was that mysql did not listening on the 3306 port at all.
What version of the jdbc driver to mysql did you use?
I'm asking, because I had older version mysql as well - and my app worked, but after upgrading to the similar version as yours - app did not work and I have to upgrade to the newest version of the jdbc driver - which was 3.1.8 I belive (before I've got 2 somethink)
Check the driver version first.
