Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to help me track this down.

Windows: XP v 5.1.2600
Apache: v 2.2
PHP: v 2.9-2-win32
MySQL: v 5.1.34-win32

Result of running the "connect" script:
"Fatal error: call to undefined function mysql_connect() in c:\php\connect.php on line 2"

I tried this in a couple different directories, including the Apache htdocs directory, with the same result.

Apache and PHP are running fine on their own; I've got a simple script running that's serving up a page with no problems.
