If anything I think Zigmunds solution is less desirable than using a table, because with other stored procedural languages such as Oracle on compilation it checks the validity of any called procedure names to check parameters and so forth, therefore if MySQL were to change the way proceudres were compiled to include such checking any error raising would the invalidate those procedures.

Not that I'm trying to argue the point, if anything we should be putting pressure on MySQL to include better exception handling and raising capabilities, they are after all in the ANSI SQL standard.

Edit : As it happens the table method doesn't work when used within a trigger as it fails even for valid calls. see the following thread...
