I have solved the problem. Thanks a billion! I even found information here to solves a problem with displaying the Thai characters in an OpenOffice spreadsheet. A had to add a line SET NAMES UTF-8 in the ODBC configuration and now I can see the Thai characters as well!! I am very happy indeed!!!
