Patrick Galbraith has made some significant progress on the federated storage engine which should improve its performance and usefulness. Hopefully these improvements will be available soon.
The code you are currently using should be viewed as an unoptimized technology demonstration with some limited usefulness - specifically its use should be limited to small tables or queries where some unique key can be used to retrieve individual rows.
