As for the "tips and tricks" part, we have the comment system of the manual (although we don't like to see tips and tricks that relate to specific programming languages there). As for the Newbie forum, this might be the appropriate place to post "real examples".

However, the MySQL forums are brand-new, so we have no experience regarding response time, quality of postings, and so forth. A high-speed, high-quality medium would be our mailing lists, particularly the general MySQL mailing list. See http://lists.mysql.com.

Not sure what you mean. I'm not having problems selecting text with my browser (Firefox 0.8 on Win2K). In your latest posting, you cited from my posting, so it looks as if you're not having problems either. ;-)
