What I am trying to ask is if it is necessary to have that 11(or other number for that matter)...if when specifying col data type maybe it is better that the display width is omitted-for reasons I cannot think at the moment.
MySQL manual states that it is optional.

I followed your advice and set the above to decimal(5,2)-it certainly makes more sense.
