Tried Mario Oestert's Config

I've been struggling with the same error as Ned Wilsher. I tried Mario's code and it successfully logged everything in except that it did give me the following error/warning:

The mbstring PHP extension was not found and you seem to be using a multibyte charset. Without the mbstring extension phpMyAdmin is unable to split strings correctly and it may result in unexpected results.

When I attempt to select a server it complains:

MySQL said: #1045 - Access denied for user 'admin'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

Cannot load mysqli extension. Please check your PHP configuration. - Documentation

I suspect with the standard modified I'm still missing something regarding my user set-up or within MySQL with my user set-up. I did create a phpmyadmin user, but I'm not having much luck with it yet.
