Re: utf8 character show as ???
UTF8 support is compiled into mysqld, nne does not need to have utf8.xml file.
Make sure that you start client with proper character set:
SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'character_set%';
If you have character_set_client not equal to utf8,
try to specify charset when starting mysql:
mysql --default-character-set=utf8
