MYSQL doesn't 'see' accents

I imported a table containing text and inserted it into a column which was supposed to hold distinct values. I'd set up the column as distinct in Access so I was not too worried but MySql omitted a number of records and when I checked why, I found that MySQL counted Résumé the same as Resume so this was skipped. Also a phrase containing 2 spaces between 2 words was seen as the same as the same word containing 1 space between the 2 words. Is there a way to control this behaviour, especially the problem with the Accents?
