The data was imported from a tab delimited text file (ie Notepad) using Load Data. Most character sets support é at least, so I hadn't thought that MySQL would need a special character set for that. The accents showed up fine in the Notepad file. I didn't specify a character set for MySql Community Server when I installed it (I assumed it would use one of the basic system fonts) but all of my system fonts that I've seen seem to support the simple accents.
