The index corruptions due to heavy concurrency is a known bug. But nobody was able to provide a repeatable test case yet. Since we are not yet able to repeat the problem at MySQL AB, we do not know the location of the bug and thus can't fix it yet.

It has been reported that building without linuxthreads helps. This will not cure the MySQL bug, but changes the timing so that the bug does not show up that often.

If switching to InnoDB is an option for you, go ahead. You won't have any MyISAM index corruptions any more ;). I don't know about performance implications though. Nobody, who tried this change, ever reported if he was pleased with it.
