So as I understand it, there are three possible solutions to this:
1. Permissions on the mysql file
2. Permissions on the /tmp directory
3. SELinux preventing sqld from terminating

Is that right?
Fedcora Core 5 --> Upgrade from Shrike
SQL 5.x
Same error 2002

I've disabled SELinux as far as I can with the CLI, to no avail.
I am having unmentionable issues with this, but was unable to find this thread before I fell comatos on the keyboard and had to leave work.
I'll try it again tomorrow, will let you know if any of these worked.
