Fixed install error on WinXP - worked for me....

Found there is some kind of bug causing this error if you try to set the root password during install on WinXP. Run these commands from a command prompt or from the "Start > Run" menu:

sc stop MySQL
sc delete MySQL

Now run the "MySQL Server Instance Config Wizard" from "Start > Programs > MySQL > MySQL Server 5.1"

Select "Reconfigure Instance"
When you reach the page to set security options uncheck the "Modify Security Settings" checkbox and proceed to the execute button on the next page.

Once the service starts successfully and the installation is finnished you can go back through the "MySQL Server Instance Config Wizard" and set a password.

If this doesn't work the first try you may have to uninstall MySQL from "Add/ Remove Programs" in control panel and remove the MySQL folders from both "Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data" and also "Program Files". Then reinstall being sure to uncheck the box for "Modify Security Settings"
