Michael, thanks a ton for your post!! (http://forums.mysql.com/read.php?11,4460,5587&login=1) I'm going to add a couple changes:

1. remove the present service one of these ways:
a. Use the MySQL Server Instance Configuration Wizard
b. Download and use the Service Installer (don't get hung up on the "NT" message, it works on XP...at least for me
c. from a command line run "sc delete MySql"
2. Reboot
3. Uninstall MySQL (Start/Settings/Control Panel/Revome or Add Programs).
4. Go to Starrt/Run and enter regedit to bring up the Windows Registry. Then Edit/Find and enter MySQL in the search field and his OK. It will bring up the first 'highlighted' instance of MySQL. Right click your mouse and Delete the entry. Go to Edit/Find Next and continus the jprocess until all References to your last install are removed (be careful to delete only MySQL entries or you could damage your OS). Also, be careful which "MySQL" entries you delete. For instance, I have a MySQL entry that is there because of Dreamweaver
5. Make sure the my.ini file is blank and in your Windows directory. You can use the Windows Search feature to find it, then open it by double clicking the file, deleting any entries and saving it.
6. Reinstall MySQL and the server should be successfully installed.
