Re: ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

Was getting the 1045 error. I pasted the line skip-grant-tables
in the [mysqld] section of the my.cnf file and restarted the server. I was able to log into the server. Now I upgraded the version of MYSQL and the my.cnf was overwrittem. Fine, I just repasted the line skip-grant-tables in. But now I keep getting the denied access error again.
I did check the users table and saw the password I was attempting. It was correct. So the only way I could get in was by cheating and now I can't even do that. Did the new intallation delete my password and if so should'nt I just be able to use a blank one?
