Working Solution - Mac OS X

This is I finally did.

1. Stop mysqld
2. sudo mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables

Now that you are in MySQL, run these:
3. UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('yourpass') WHERE User='root';

5. Log out
6 Log back in with new password
