I created a new folder to store my databases in - that's what I specified during the setup. When doing a re-install, I just deleted all the files in that folder. Since I hadn't been successful in my install attempt, I knew I hadn't created any database files. Any files in that folder had to be MySQL system files created during my attempts to install / configure the server.

To start the registry editor, click Start, Run, then type 'regedit' then click OK. The MySQL Server registry keys are under HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MySQL AB.

For a successful re-install, the registry keys 'probably' don't need to be deleted, and files in the folder you specified for data storage 'may not' need to be deleted.

But rather than try and test every possible configuration to identify exactly which file/files were causing the problem, I just deleted everything from previous installs I could find, to get a 'clean' re-install.
