Thanks to you all - cos this had finally solved my 2 weeks of sleeplessness !!!!

1. download MySQL Admininistrator
2. from GUI mode run mysql-administrator and connect to mysql server
3. from view menu click on Startup Parameter and then 'security' tab - click on Old Passwords
4. Restart MySQL Service
5. backinto MySQL Administrator again
6. From view menu click on User Administration click on root
7. reset your root password (I had proplems with certain number char combinations)
8. Restart MySQL service

and I followed this and it finally worked for me
