"mysql_connect(): Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client"

I get the following error trying to access the MySQL 4.1.7-nt database:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

What does this mean? What exactly is the MySQL client? Is that my php engine? I'm somewhat used only to version 3.x and have just installed this version of MySQL. Can someone please help me to solve this problem? Joachim
